Hip Hop Video Contest to Raise Awareness of Stroke
Tweens and Teens, get ready to dance for a good cause. The American Stroke Association is conducting a nationwide hip hop video contest to educate people about stroke.
The free competition, which is open to 10- to 15-year-olds, is designed to help kids learn about stroke and share their knowledge with their parents and grandparents, says the association.
Statistics from the association show that although stroke is the number 4 cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability, 93 percent of Americans do not think stroke is a major health concern.
Submissions will be put to public vote on the association’s Web site, and the top 10 videos will progress to the semifinals, where BET’s Terrence J. and Salt-n-Pepa’s Cheryl "Salt" James will choose the winning video.
"This video project is special to me because stroke hits close to home," said Terrence J. "These hip hop stroke videos will educate the next generation on being healthy and encourage all people to learn about stroke in homes, schools and youth organizations across the country."
The grand-prize winner will get a meet-and-greet with Terrence J. and other prizes.
To participate, individuals and groups should submit a video here before Sept. 21, 2012. Each video submission must include the American Stroke Association's official hip hop stroke song—"Enlighten the World on Stroke"—and a parent or grandparent. "I appreciate the efforts of the American Stroke Association. They are bringing awareness to our community concerning stroke prevention in a creative and caring way," said Salt. "When a stroke occurs, it affects family and friends — that's why it's critical that this competition be an intergenerational effort, so that people of all ages learn that stroke can happen to anyone and at any time."
