Food Experts Offer Insight on Senior Nutrition Trends

As baby boomers age, nutrition begins to play a more important role in their lives. Recent research from the Institute of Food Technologists’ Wellness 12 meeting highlights the growing need for food to help seniors control illnesses and chronic conditions such as diabetes and bone/joint problems.

Innova Market Insights’ head of research Lu Ann Williams outlined the following opportunity for food scientists, manufacturers and marketers:

  • Added protein to boost metabolism, prevent fat gain and muscle loss
  • Value of foods in preserving vision health, such as foods containing vitamin A and lutein
  • Bone health, including nondairy sources of calcium
  • Joint/mobility health, such as drinks containing glucosamine and chondroitin
  • Cognitive health, including foods with added omega 3s and B vitamins
  • Vitamin C products for immune health
  • Beta glucans and other products for heart/circulatory health

Dr. Ray Winger, managing director of Inside Foods Limited, said consumers managing a health condition will require clear labeling and affordable, tasty options. He suggested offering financial incentives to get seniors to purchase healthier food options, such as no or lower tax on low-sodium bread.
