United Airlines has donated 10 million award miles to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The nonprofit organization of specialized hospitals will use the donation to offset transportation costs for families.

"We're truly touched by United's generosity and by the thousands of contest voters who support our mission of bringing love to the rescue for children in need," said Douglas Maxwell, president and CEO of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The 10 Million Charity Miles Giveaway contest asked the public and members of the Untied Airlines MileagePlus loyalty program to vote for a favorite of 38 charitable organizations that included Shriners Hospitals for Children. Voting took place Dec. 6-25, 2012.
